A few months ago I received an email claiming to be from an American Soldier. I of course read the email eager to see what our soldiers are up to. As I read this so called cry for help, I was rendered speechless on how someone could send an email of this magnitude to an American citizen; thinking they could get away with what they were asking. Now, like most people I usually just click the delete button on my keyboard and never think about what I read again. This one however, was so close to home that I had to look up how to report such a miss representation of our country. With luck I found out that the Federal Trade Commission handles these types of complaints. Then turns them over to the FBI who then handles other aspects of the investigation. I promptly filled out an application online for this email to be investigated along with a few carefully chosen words so that my request was not over looked.
It has been some time since I sent my request and just by chance today I was on the FBI site doing some research. I found this notice posted on the web site, “These are basic outlines of common Internet Frauds. Variations on the individual themes are endless. The Nigerian letter scheme, for example, has been altered to appear to come from U.S. servicemen in Iraq.” read more in my next blog.
